One of the best answers to this question is, add Recovery Coaching services.
What’s your first reaction to this? “Nah, I don’t want to deal with addicted people – too scary, too tough,” you might say. Well, that’s what some coaches said about people with diabetes and obesity, angry or poor performing managers and adults with ADHD, but look at how the coaches who embraced these “difficult” clients are fairing now. They’re part of three of the most rapidly growing industries – health, executive and life coaching, respectively. But where will the next revolution in coaching occur? Well, after over 20 years in the addiction treatment world and the last decade in health & executive coaching, I can tell you it’ll be in coaching subspecialties, in general, and Recovery Coaching, in particular. This is mainly because more and more people are coming to coaching with specialized needs (e.g., addiction) and only 1 in 10 people with an addiction ever get into treatment, which means they don’t have access to an actual provider. So, who’s there to help bridge that gap? A coach! The 9 out of 10 not in treatment are in need of a coach’s motivational acumen to help them navigate treatment options and encourage them to engage in and make the best use of treatment, all of which can be done over calls, texts, emails, Skype or FaceTime – like you probably currently work. But don’t wait to get trained until everyone else is doing it. Consider doing it now. And keep in mind, addicted people can and do change (I’ve seen it countless times), but only with the right strategies – ones coaches can learn and use effectively.
